FAQ’s

What are orangeries?

Orangeries are typically brick-based structures with tall windows. They traditionally come with a flat roof and a glass lantern. Despite its confusion with a conservatory, a traditional orangery can be recognised by its distinctive appearance.

Why are orangeries so popular?

Orangeries are popular for various reasons. When executed well, orangeries are durable and resistant to weather and temperature fluctuations. This makes them ideal if you wish to have additional living space, but are a more cost-effective option than purchasing a bigger home.

What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

Generally speaking, orangeries tend to have less glass and more brick than conservatories. As a result, orangeries are less prone to temperature fluctuations and are ideal to be used as a living space all year round.

Can you make the structural goalposts more visually appealing?

Yes, we can! We are able to conceal the structural goalposts within brick piers or super-insulated columns, depending on the style you prefer. The super-insulated columns can be further decorated to add a beautiful charm to your living space, and also have the additional benefit of being five times more thermally efficient than a brick pier.

Do I need planning permission to build an orangery?

Generally speaking, you should not need planning permission for an orangery. However, you do need planning permission if more than 50% of the land around the original house is to be covered or the extension is forward of the front or side of the original house that faces onto a road.

Additionally, you may need planning permission if you live in a listed building or designated area, or fail under an Article 4 Direction. If you are unsure, it is best to contact your local council for more information.

How much are orangeries?

It is challenging to say the exact pricing of your orangery. There are a lot of variables that affect the price of orangeries. To give you a quote, we will need information such as the size, the style, your approximate location in Suffolk, Essex, or the surrounding area, and any additional information.
