Blue Light Windows: Meet our surveyor

Local family-run window, door and conservatory business, Blue Light Windows, showcases its secret weapon – Darren Wegg!

Blue Light Windows, Doors and Conservatories has recently seen real growth, building on its already sterling reputation serving homeowners throughout Suffolk and Essex.

Lead surveyor, Darren Wegg, has been with the company for 15 years, with a further 15 years in the wider industry, meaning customers can book the company in with confidence thanks to the wealth of experience that comes with every visit.

Prior to Darren’s window career, he was a cabinet maker, meaning attention to detail is built into everything he does – from a new front door to a full house of windows and doors, and everything in between.

We sat down with Darren at the company’s Woodbridge Road showroom for a chat about life at Blue Light Windows, the changing face of the window industry, and what the average day as a window surveyor looks like.

Firstly, can you tell us a bit more about your background?

“I started out as a trained cabinet maker, creating high-end, one-off pieces. I then moved into installing windows 30 years ago and moved into surveying from there.”

How did you learn to be a surveyor? And what qualifications do you need for the role?

“To qualify professionally, I initially completed an NVQ and am now a fully certified surveyor through Certass. Along with Fensa, they are governing bodies that carry out random inspections to ensure surveyors and installers work to the correct requirements and deliver the best results for consumers.”

How has the industry changed since you started out?

“The window industry is ever-evolving, with better technology and more refined products. Due to the demand for more comfortable living spaces, conservatories have mostly been replaced with warm roofs, making these spaces much more usable year-round.

Front doors are now mostly a composite construction, which offers better security while also being resistant to warping and swelling. They are low-maintenance and weather-resistant too.

Aluminium products are also now very popular with new builds, while bifold doors are an excellent choice for wider openings.”

Can you tell us what your average day looks like?

“First of all, I head into the office and have a cup of tea! Then I print off the surveys I will be attending that day and spend most of the morning carrying these out.

In the afternoon, I work closely with James, our installations manager, where we complete post-survey amendments and make sure everything is present and correct before placing orders with our manufacturers.

I am also on hand to help the installers if they have any questions at any point in the process – passing on knowledge to newer members of the team is one of my favourite things.”

What do you love about the job?

“My favourite thing about my job is doing my very best to make the installers’ jobs as straightforward as possible while achieving the best outcomes for our customers.

The more challenging the job, the more I enjoy it! Speaking to customers is also a massive pleasure – especially with a cup of tea!”

As well as ensuring a good fit for your windows, what regulations need to be met?

“The most important things are thermal performance ratings, ventilation, fire egress, safety glass, child safety, disability requirements and the structural integrity of buildings.

Customers can therefore be reassured that their home improvements are safe, perform exactly as they should, and look great.”

What is the best thing about working at Blue Light Windows?

“It is a fantastic team at all levels, constantly striving to improve how we operate while delivering fantastic results for customers.”

Finally – and surely most importantly – for anyone having you over for a survey, how do you take your tea?

“White with one sugar. You will receive a massive smile!”
